Teamsters Endorse Dave Jones for Senate

Sacramento, CA – Today, Teamsters Joint Council No. 7 announced their support for Dave Jones for State Senate. Jones is running in the open-seat race for the 6th State Senate District in 2022.

Rome Aloise, President of Teamsters Joint Council #7, released the following statement announcing the endorsement:
“Dave Jones has always stood with working people and supported their rights to organize and bargain for decent wages, benefits and working conditions. In the face of huge corporations with growing wealth and power, Californians need advocates who are unafraid to take on tough fights. As a legislator and Insurance Commissioner, Dave fought to expand access to healthcare, protect workers and consumers, and create economic opportunity for all. Dave Jones is the advocate that Californians need and deserve in the State Senate.”

Teamsters Joint Council 7 represents more than 100,000 members in 23 Local Unions in 48 counties of Northern California, and the Central Valley and 14 Northern Nevada counties. (This territory would be the 10th largest state in the country.) With 40,000 members between Bakersfield and Sacramento Teamsters Joint Council 7 is the largest union in the Central Valley.

ABOUT DAVE JONES
Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
 
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.     
 
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
 
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
