STATE SENATOR SCOTT WIENER ENDORSES DAVE JONES FOR SENATE

Sacramento, CA – State Senator Scott Wiener announced his endorsement of Dave Jones for State Senate today. Senator Wiener joins a growing coalition of elected, community, and education leaders who are backing Jones in the race for Senate District 6.

In announcing his endorsement, Senator Wiener said:
“When it comes to fighting for progressive policies, Dave Jones walks the walk. Time and again he has led path-breaking efforts to combat climate change, build affordable housing, and advance equity and justice. Dave has been a lifelong ally of the LGBTQ+ community, and never wavered in his commitment to equality for all.  Dave Jones understands that progress depends on action, collaboration, and results, and that’s what he’ll bring to the table as a State Senator.” 

ABOUT SCOTT WIENER
State Senator Scott Wiener was first elected to represent District 11 in 2016. District 11 includes all of San Francisco, Broadmoor, Colma, and Daly City, as well as portions of South San Francisco. Senator Wiener has authored 42 bills that have been signed into law, including SD35, a landmark law streamlining housing approvals in cities not meeting their housing goals, and SB700, the largest investment in clean energy storage in California history. 

Before his election to the Senate, Senator Wiener served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing the district previously represented by Harvey Milk. Prior to his career in elected office, Senator Wiener spent 15 years practicing law, and co-chaired the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club, BALIF (the Bay Area’s LGBTQ bar association), and the San Francisco LGBTQ Community Center, as well as serving on the national board of directors of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization.

ABOUT DAVE JONES
Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
 
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.     
 
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
 
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
