Sacramento, CA – Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced his endorsement of Dave Jones for State Senate today. O’Connell joins a growing coalition of elected, community, and education leaders who are backing Jones.
In announcing his endorsement, O’Connell remarked:
“Dave Jones is and always has been an unabashed and undaunted champion for justice. As a legal aid attorney, Dave fought relentlessly for lower income families. As a local City Councilmember, State Assemblymember, and Insurance Commissioner, Dave worked every day to advance a progressive agenda and make government work for Californians. I am proud to support Dave Jones for State Senate, and I hope you’ll join me.”
ABOUT JACK O’CONNELL
Jack O’Connell served as California’s 26th State Superintendent of Public Instruction between 2003 and 2011. He previously served in the State Senate, the State Assembly, and as a Member of the Santa Barbara County School Board. O’Connell is the author of numerous landmark education bills in both the California Assembly and the State Senate, and has worked diligently to improve public education in California, particularly through the Cal State University system.
ABOUT DAVE JONES
Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
