ASSEMBLYMEMBER KEVIN MCCARTY ENDORSES DAVE JONES FOR SENATE

Sacramento, CA – State Assemblymember Kevin McCarty announced his endorsement of Dave Jones for State Senate today. McCarty joins a growing coalition of elected, community, and education leaders who are backing Jones in the race for Senate District 6. McCarty represents voters in the 7th State Assembly District, 84% of whom also live in the 6th State Senate District.

In announcing his endorsement, Assemblymember McCarty said:
“No one is better prepared to fight for the Sacramento region in the State Senate than Dave Jones. Dave has decades of experience fighting for equity for our diverse communities. He has delivered progressive results—from affordable housing, access to healthcare and education,  environmental protection, justice for consumers, and equity in public policy. On the Sacramento City Council, in the State Assembly, and as California’s Insurance Commissioner, Dave never wavered in his commitment to help the most vulnerable Californians. I am proud to support his campaign, and I look forward to serving alongside him.” 

ABOUT KEVIN McCARTY
Kevin McCarty has served in the California State Assembly since 2014. McCarty currently serves as Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, which oversees the largest component of California’s multi-billion dollar budget. As Chair, McCarty made historic investments in public education including expanding access to preschool for low and middle income families, providing greater career technical education programs, and increasing student enrollment at our public colleges and universities.  Other legislative priorities for Assemblymember McCarty include addressing housing affordability, fighting climate change, championing criminal justice reform, curbing gun violence, tackling the opioid crisis and advocating for the middle class. McCarty began his public service career as a Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Commissioner and served on the Sacramento City Council from 2004 to 2014. In addition to his council duties, McCarty worked as a legislative advocate for Early Edge California, an early education non-profit. McCarty grew up in Sacramento, attended American River College, and received a bachelor’s in Political Science from CSU Long Beach and a master’s in Public Policy and Administration from Sacramento State University. He and his wife, Leticia, have twin girls and reside in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Sacramento.

ABOUT DAVE JONES
Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
 
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.     
 
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
 
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
