AFSCME COUNCIL 57 ENDORSES DAVE JONES FOR STATE SENATE

Sacramento, CA – Today, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 57 announced its endorsement of Dave Jones for State Senate. AFSCME Council 57 joins a growing list of organizations and elected and community leaders supporting Dave Jones.

Kim Carter Martinez, Political Director for AFSCME Council 57, released the following statement announcing the endorsement:
“Dave Jones has always stood on the side of workers, and has fought for the rights of all working people. Our members work for the public in schools and community colleges, transit agencies, cities, counties and other agencies, and clinics and hospitals, and Dave understands that these public services and the workers who provide them are critical to our communities. We trust Dave to fight for a more just, progressive, and prosperous California, and we are proud to support his campaign for State Senate.”

AFSCME Council 57 is comprised of 26 local unions representing 35,000 members throughout Northern California and the Central Valley. Established in 1963, the Council was formed as a progressive, member-driven labor organization dedicated to empowering and securing dignity and respect for all workers. AFSCME Council 57  members work together to improve wages, benefits and working conditions through organizing, collective bargaining and political action. ABOUT DAVE JONES
Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
 
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.     
 
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
 
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
