The Sierra Club is one of the nation’s oldest and largest environmental organizations. It was founded in 1892 by a group of Californians who valued the state’s wilderness areas. Today, the Club has chapters in every state and a national membership that exceeds 1 million. California is unique among states in that it has 13 chapters, representing more than 400,000 members and supporters. The mission of Sierra Club California is to promote the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of California’s environment, and enable chapters and grassroots activists to speak as one voice to promote California conservation.
