Sacramento, CA – Today, California State Assemblymember and Speaker Pro Tempore Kevin Mullin announced his support for Dave Jones for State Senate. Assemblymember Mullin joins a growing list of organizations and elected and community leaders supporting Dave Jones.

Assemblymember Mullin released the following statement announcing the endorsement:

“Dave Jones has a proven track record of advocating for all Californians as Insurance Commissioner and a State Assemblymember. Climate change is at a crisis point, and the legislature would benefit from his unique expertise on environmental protection now more than ever. Dave Jones has the experience and unique policy knowledge necessary to tackle the most urgent issues Californians face. From increasing access to high quality healthcare, defending democracy and the right to vote, and protecting clean air and water, Dave Jones is ready to represent and fight for Californians in the State Senate.”

Kevin Mullin was first elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020 to the California State Assembly representing the 22nd District in San Mateo County. Mullin was sworn in as Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore for the 2021-2022 legislative session.

Mullin’s top legislative priorities are elections reform and strengthening our democracy. As a legislator, Mullin has been extremely effective in increasing voter access including being responsible for legislation making it easier for Californians to register to vote, and enabled San Mateo County to be the first county in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct a regularly scheduled off year election entirely by mail. Another landmark elections bill Kevin authored, AB249, gave California the strongest disclosure laws in the nation, to increase transparency in election spending.

Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
