Congresswoman Katie Porter Endorses Dave Jones for Senate

Today, Congresswoman Katie Porter announced her support for Dave Jones for State Senate. Jones is running in the open-seat race for the 6th State Senate District in 2022.

Congresswoman Porter released the following statement announcing her endorsement:

“Today, I am proud to announce that I am endorsing Dave Jones for CA State Senate. As Insurance Commissioner, Dave took on some of the largest and most powerful financial interests in California and fought to help consumers and families. As a legislator, Dave championed historic progressive policies to expand early childhood education, protect consumers, and prohibit discrimination in health care. In the State Senate, Dave Jones will fight for our shared values; advancing equity, justice, and opportunity for every person. I’m proud to support his campaign, and I hope you will join me.” 


Katie Porter is serving her second term representing California’s 45th Congressional District. As a consumer protection attorney, Katie has spent nearly twenty years fighting powerful interests and Wall Street banks on behalf of consumers and families. She’s a national leader in consumer protection and has won big victories against financial institutions who cheat consumers. Prior to serving in Congress, Katie taught bankruptcy law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law and served as California’s independent monitor of banks in a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement.


Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.

As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.     

Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).

Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
