John Chiang Throws Support Behind Dave Jones for State Senate

Sacramento, CA – Former California State Treasurer and Controller John Chiang has endorsed Dave Jones for State Senate. Jones is running in the open-seat race for the 6th State Senate District in 2022.
In announcing his endorsement, Chiang released the following statement in support of Jones:
“Dave Jones worked tirelessly to protect consumers as California’s Insurance Commissioner. So many of Dave Jones’ accomplishments as a legislator, a legal aid attorney, and Insurance Commissioner go unnoticed by the press, but are life-changing and essential for the people they affect. Dave is truly a champion for people who need a voice and a fighter for Californians who need his help. I know that Dave will be a Senator for working people, and I look forward to what he accomplishes in the years ahead.” 

John Chiang served as California’s State Treasurer from 2014 to 2018. He previously served as State Controller from 2007 to 2015 and on the California Board of Equalization from 1997 to 2007. He also served as student body Vice President during Jones’ tenure as student body President at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Illinois in the early 1980s.

Dave Jones began his career as a legal aid attorney, providing free legal assistance to the poor with Legal Services of Northern California. In 1995, he was one of only 13 Americans awarded the prestigious White House Fellowship. Dave served for three years as Special Assistant and Counsel to United States Attorney General Janet Reno.
As a Sacramento City Councilmember from 1999 to 2004, Dave authored groundbreaking laws  requiring developers to build more affordable housing, paying workers a living wage, and recognizing domestic partnerships. Dave represented Sacramento in the State Assembly from 2004 through 2010, where he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, and the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. Dave authored 70 bills that were signed into law and was a champion for protecting consumers, expanding access to healthcare, building affordable housing, expanding early child education, protecting the environment, and fighting for working families.     
Dave served as California’s seventh Insurance Commissioner between 2011 and 2018, where he worked on behalf of 38 million Californians. In this role, he saved consumers and businesses over $3.11 billion in premiums by regulating rates for auto, homeowners, and other property and casualty insurance. He also implemented healthcare reform, including market reforms to protect consumers and expanded access to health insurance. Since leaving office as Insurance Commissioner, Dave has worked to combat climate change as a Senior Director for The Nature Conservancy and as the Director of the Climate Risk Initiative at UC Berkeley’s  Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE).
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Kim Flores, are residents of the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento and are the proud parents of two children.
